New Lignosulfonates as next generation antimicrobials
University of St Andrews
Prof. Nick Westwood/ Prof. Alexandra M Slavin
I am undergoing a PhD in St Andrews focusing on the modification of lignin in an effort to develop antimicrobial compounds. Lignin is a by-product of biofuels and so finding a commercial use for it would make greener fuel options more economically viable and cost-effective. I will be working in BluTest in Glasgow to perform microbial screens of my developed compounds. I received my B.A in Medicinal Chemistry from Trinity College Dublin, where I carried out a project developing compounds for S. aureus decolonisation. I am very excited to further develop the skills I learned there in this PhD.
